My BIZ Journey – The Boxtones

The Boxtones, a 5-piece Scottish-Canadian band and one of the first music consultancies to be set up in the UAE, continue to make noise in the local scene as a licensed UAE-based rock band. Formed five years ago, The Boxtones were signed to a major label, Universal Music MENA, which allowed the group to build a huge fan base in the Middle East. They have played alongside music royalty such as Sir Elton John, The Who, Pharrell Williams, the Stereophonics, and more.

Being an unlicensed musician comes with huge restrictions. The Boxtones have managed to veer away from these restrictions by setting up the band as a company.  They secured a suitable trade license with Business Incorporation Zone (BIZ) in 2013. They have been performing all over the UAE with the appropriate approval from the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM). While they are a mainstay of the UAE music scene, the band looks forward to playing more in the UK and Asia.

Watch our sit-down interview with The Boxtones’ Gary and Gill Tierney to find out how BIZ helped the band become a business entity in the UAE, enabling them to grow their audience and business.
